Personal Goal Setting For Success
Personal goal setting sounds like a basic, straightforward process of writing lists of what you want to accomplish, and putting together a plan of action to achieve or complete these items. Easy. Or is it? I have in the past written my goals and put together a plan with all the activities needed to accomplish them, and then wondered why I was not able to get motivated to make the goals a reality. Now I understand why my goals are sometimes derailed, and I can pinpoint the thoughts that lead to my own self sabotage. By learning these clues to understanding your own goal glitches, your success in setting personal goals and achieving them will also increase tremendously.
This may surprise you but, often we don’t succeed in reaching our goals because…., we don’t want to. Are you familiar with that nagging feeling of dread when you task yourself to work on something you really don’t want to do? Sometimes these are things we feel we “should” do, or we want to want to do them. But, deep down, we don’t want to work on this task, or own this item, or cultivate this ability. So we don’t do the work, and we don’t accomplish the goal. The term for the relationship between what we want to accomplish and the thoughts that propel us to proceed with the associated tasks to achieve this accomplishment is congruence. In order for us to put our best effort into achieving our goals, they must first be congruent with what we want and who we are at the basic levels of our consciousness. Our goals must mesh together in the same “congruent” direction or we may sabotage our efforts and the goal won’t be accomplished.
The key is to listen to your inner voice. Those subtle thoughts that guide us in the best direction. When you decide on a particular goal, note how you feel. Emotions of excitement, curiosity, wonder and tranquility are positive, and let us know we are deciding on a goal that we want to accomplish, a goal that fits with who we are and where we want to be. On the other hand, emotions of dread, anxiety, and fear, are negative and work against our attainment of the goal. If you experience negative emotions after setting a goal, try to examine why you are feeling this way. Does the goal fit with who you are, who you want to become, and what you want to accomplish with your life? Are you overwhelmed? Does the goal seem too large or unattainable? Does breaking the goal down into smaller accomplishments make you feel more comfortable, more positive?
The process of examining how we feel about reaching our goals has a definite positive or negative influence on goal achievement. Congruence in personal goal setting, wanting to achieve the goal, propels us forward and helps to bring the goal into reality. Look inward. Pay attention to how you feel. Instead of the logic you may apply to the desirability of your goal, focus on how you feel about the goal. Ask yourself if the achievement of this goal helps you on your path to who you want to become and ultimately what you want to do. Does this goal fit with your life purpose?
Understanding your true feelings and motivations are crucial in successful personal goal setting and the achievement of your goals. Mastering the balance of congruence plays a primary role, creating the conditions in your thought processes that help to turn your goals into reality.
